Set Goals

"goal"

Most important is to have a goal.
To set goals, you will need to find priorities. I talk about your priorities.
Timeframe 1, 3, 5 and more years.
I mean goals, not one. Make sure you cover all the goals there are.
What do you really want?

For me it is important to keep going. Learn and write. I need to write to clean up my head.
So my goal is to write a book. Or two.
I give myself 3-5 years.

Meanwhile I am working fulltime and write a lot of things, everywhere.
My goal here is to do something worthwhile.
This is ongoing. So I can't set a timeframe. But I can set 3-5 years for a position to invluence more people and decissions.

Also, I live in a rented flat in Hannover. I would like to move to a house, somewhere in a smaler city or rural. Maybe somewhere near Ostfriesland.
One day I migth have enough money to buy a house.
Hope it will not take longer than 3-5 years. Maybe in 3 years I live in a house and in 5 years I own it.

Ho do we come there? Whats next?

Plan ahaed

"success"

Now we have to break down the goals in smaller goals and short milestones. Sounds like a projekt? It is.
Why can't we just keep the goal and archive it?
Because you are a lasy bone and keep unfocusing all the time. You just keep doing what you do and swoosch the time is up and you have done nothing to archive it.
Therefore we make a plan.
Set small steps, one at a time.
Half the distance, set the smal goals, and half again. Till the steps are small enough to do it.
We start with what to do last, to archive the goal. Or waht to do now to start with, like creating this plan.
Next what comes before that last step or fther the next step, and so on.
Sometimes you can easier identify what needs to be done in the middle of the timeframe. Just take all the steps you can find. The more the better.
Sounds easy, right?

Get Creative

Imagine, you want to cross a river. The water is shallow, some stones peak out of the water and you want to try to reach the other side without getting wet.
You take the first stone and look from there for the second. After the third and fourth, you start drifting to one side and move more and more down stream instead across.
You go back a few steps and try to move more to the other side. Till again you start moving to much away from your goal and up stream this time.
Especially as closer you come to the other shore, you tend to drift of to either side.
When you look back you can't identify any position where it will be save to satrt again and correct your path.
Therefore we plan some easy milestones for our journey. Mark them, check them off and create a new start for the next steps to come.

"forrest"

Unknowns

You will face situations, where you need to adjust your plan, correct it, or even start from scretch.
If you prepare for these events, considre what to do if you run into a roadblock.
Every plan is only as good as the plan B you bring with it.
If you plan where it can break, you don't have to live with unkowns or delays any longer.

Every goal needs a range of fulfillment levels. As it depends on time and ressources, you can spend to archive them, you should set a range of "as good as" levels, to adjust in time and move on.

How you can judge the fulfillment level and when to move on, is depending on your experiance. I can provide some examples:

Details

Most times, where plans don't work, it was missing details.
Look into details. It is the work you spend, before others do their job, which risk the project to fail.
Of cause you can't know it all, yet. Therefore, learn them on the way.
Start with a certain grade of accuracy, improve it along the way to the finish.
At the time you need the details, have them with you.
If you don't need them, even better.
